The ammoniate [Cs(18-crown-6)](2)Bi(2)(.)7NH(3) was prepared by solvating CS5Bi4 together with an excess of 18-crown-6 in liquid ammonia. Single crystals were isolated and characterized by low temperature X-ray structure analysis. [Cs(18-crown-6)](2)Bi(2)(.)7 NH3 (C24H69Bi2CS2N7O12) crystallizes in the space group P2(1)/c with a = 10.1477(7) Angstrom, b = 31.257(2) Angstrom, c = 14.61 (1) Angstrom and 90.428(9)degrees. The compound contains a Bi-2(2-) anion with a short Bi-Bi distance of 2.8635(4) Angstrom. The anion coordinates side-on to the central caesium cations of two [Cs(18-crown-6)](+) complexes, resulting in a neutral, molecular [Cs(18-crown-6)](2)Bi-2 complex.
