Abstract

Complex regional pain syndrome type I (CRPS I) - formerly named as Sudeck's atrophy or reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) - describes a complex of symptoms with chronic, poorly controllable pain, autonomic, sensomotoric and trophic alterations. It is mainly caused by trauma or surgery, a mental predisposition is disputed. A profound medical history together with a meticulous clinical examination is still the diagnostic "gold standard". Radiological modalities alone can secure the diagnosis. The initiation of an intensive multimodal therapy is mandatory. The present article highlights the classification and clinical presentation of the disease.
