A reactivity based fluoride sensing method exploiting both its nucleophilic and basic character has been developed. This novel dual mode strategy offers both a visible "naked-eye'' and a "fluorescence-on'' detection. Upon nucleophilic addition of F(-) to fluorochromic maleimides this approach allows for selective detection of fluoride from other (critical) basic anions, such as acetate, hydroxide or cyanide.
