Abstract

The current elaboration, validation and implementation of TCM-Herbal Drug Monographs is the consequence of an increasing interest and utilisation of Chinese medicinal plants in most of the EU member states. Due to a high risk potential of these Chinese herbal drugs the respective Commissions of the European and the German Pharmacopoeia decided in 2005 to establish the necessary quality monographs and to implement these for Europe and Germany respectively. The elaboration of these quality monographs should be carried out on the basis of the current Chinese Pharmacopoeia, however, it was concluded that an experimental examination had to be carried out in each case. This work was attributed to experts in the field coming from most of the EU member states. The current problems and results obtained so far will be discussed in the following.
