Abstract

Reaction of the LiCH3-reduced Cp'Nb-2(eta(2)-Te-2)H (Cp' = tBuC(5)H(4)) with CO2(CO)(8) and subsequent treatment of the obtained mixture of cluster compounds with 3 equiv of CH3I gave the neutral complex {Cp'Nb-2(CO)}(2)[Co9Te6(CO)(8)] (2), a mixture of salts containing the [Co9Te6(CO)(8)](-) anion (3) and [Cp'Nb-4(2)(mu-CH3Te)mu-Te]I[Co11Te7(CO)(10)] (5). Complex 2 was identified by comparison of spectroscopic data with known data, whereas recrystallization of 3 from THF gave a few crystals of known [Na(THF)(6)][Co9Te6(CO)(8)] (4). ESI mass spectrometry and X-ray diffraction analysis of compound 5 show that the salt [Cp'4Nb2Te2CH3]I forms a matrix containing the neutral cluster [Co11Te7(CO)(10)], which has only limited stability in the free state.
