Abstract

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate differences in treatment of unipolor and bipolar depressions during inpatient care. Methods: Based upon the psychiatric basic documentation system (DGPPN-BADO) data of patients with unipolar depression (n=2056) and bipolar depression (n=160) were analysed. Results: 95% of patients with unipolar (UD) and bipolar depressions (BD) receive antidepressants during in-patient care. Patients with BD are treated with mood stabilizers like lithium, carbamazepine or valproate more often than patients with UD. 35% of patients with UD and nearly 80% of patients with BD get a combination treatment with antidepressonts and mood stabilizers. During in-patient core benzo-diazepines are prescribed for one-third of patients, neuroleptics for one-half of patients with UD and BD, respectively. Conclusion: Differences in psychopharmacological treatment of patients with UD and BD during in-patient care are clinically convenient and correspond to the new practice guidelines of the DGPPN to a great extent, but mood-stabilizing medication should be considered more regarding maintenance and prophylactic therapy.
