An eightfold donor-substituted porphyrin with free meso positions 1 has been obtained for the first time. In the solid state one of the two methoxy groups on each pyrrole ring lies almost parallel to the porphyrin plane, thus allowing conjugation with the pi-electron system of the macrocycle. Further evidence is provided by the spectroscopic properties of 1, which deviate significantly from those of the related octaalkylporphyrins.
