Abstract

Background: Day hospices represent a new form of outpatient palliative care in Germany. Despite initial recommendations, there are still no standardized guidelines for their content and structure. Objectives: As part of the IMPULS-trial (Investigation into the implementation, realization and benefits of a day hospice), patients, relatives, and experts were interviewed about their expectations of the day hospice institution, in order to optimize the further design and implementation of day hospices. Materials and methods: An interview guideline was developed for the interviews with open-ended questions on the definition, aims, content, and organizational aspects of a day hospice. The evaluation was carried out by using hermeneutic text interpretation. Results: In all, 11 qualitative interviews were conducted. A day hospice should, above all, counteract the social isolation of patients, relieve the burden on relatives, and provide palliative care. Preferred features include opening hours from 8 am to 4 pm, trained staff, medical care, accessibility, individual/group rooms, an appealing ambience, a garden, and a balanced activity program. The name "day hospice" is controversial. It would be desirable to have information about day hospice passed on by general practitioners/social services, digital public relations, and comprehensive care. Conclusions: Patients, relatives, and experts expect a day hospice to provide positive benefits to the guests and their relatives. Practical tips for the precise implementation of the day hospice project were provided during the interviews. It remains to be seen how day hospices develop and grow, and it would be useful to conduct studies on this subject.
