Reactions of di-tert-butyldiphosphatetrahedrane (tBuCP)2 with Mes*O-center dot, (PhSe)2, and I2 produce 1,2-diphosphacyclobutene derivatives (tBuCPR)2 [R = OMes* (1), SePh (2), I (3); Mes* = 2,4,6-tri-tert-butylphenyl]. Reaction of 3 with LiAlH4 affords the elusive 1,2-dihydro-1,2-diphosphacyclobutene (tBuCPH)2 (4).
