Abstract

The purpose of this article is to give a brief overview of current references in abdominal radiology in 2012. The selection of manuscripts was based on a subjective assessment by the authors and come from the leading journals in radiology. In the field of conventional radiology only a few papers were published with the main emphasis on pointing out that modern cross-sectional diagnostic imaging can substitute conventional imaging without increasing radiation exposure of patients. During the past 10 years radiation exposure during CT-colonography (CTC) was significantly reduced. Trained technologists can achieve similar results compared to trained radiologist in the assessment CTCs. The main thrust of articles covering liver imaging, was to emphasis the versatility of MRI. Diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) can increase lesion detectability compared to contrast enhanced MRI alone. Differentiation between adenoma and FNH can be improved using liver-specific contrast agents during MRI. In the field of interventional oncology an interesting long-term observation of patients with small liver colorectal cancer metastases treated with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and systemic chemotherapy was published. A similar outcome compared to surgical resection could be achieved combining RFA and chemotherapy. A further study reported that delaying intrahepatic tumor progression with TACE might have a survival benefit even in case of advanced-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
