Abstract

This article describes the recidivism rates of child pornography and child sexual abuse offences in Germany between 2008 and 2013 (N = 5,318) through a systematic analysis of the Federal Central Criminal Register Files. The study highlights the differences between the examined offender groups regarding sexual and non-sexual recidivism. Low recidivism rates for sex offences on children were determined within all offender groups. Child sexual abusers with an initial offence pursuant to article 176 German StGB were more likely to reoffend pursuant to article 176 German StGB than any other offender groups. The sexual re-offences took place approximately within 2.75 years. Higher recidivism rates for non-sexual offences than for sexual offences were found. No significant differences between the groups regarding non-sexual re-offences were found.
