Abstract

Despite major advances and increasing use of imaging methods and molecular genetic testing, (concentric) needle electromyography still has its established value in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders. Electromyography is particularly helpful in the early diagnosis of, for instance, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or axonal neuropathies, myotonic disorders, and myopathies, and in the assessment of the time course of neurogenic disorders, differentiation of peripheral vs. central weakness, and early detection of reinnervation.
