Quality of life, subjective wellbeing and patient satisfaction: Typical and atypical antipsychotics as determinants of subjective outcome? Background: This naturalistic explorative study aimed at evaluating differences between typical and atypical antipsychotics as well as differences between various kinds of antipsychotic mono-therapy with regard to the subjective outcome criteria quality of life, subjective wellbeing, and patient satisfaction. We also examined the relevance of antipsychotics as determinants of subjective outcome. Methods: 117 schizophrenic inpatients (ICD-10: F20) of the Psychiatric University Hospital Regensburg completed questionnaires regarding quality of life (WHOQOL-BREF), subjective wellbeing under neuroleptics (SWN-K), patient satisfaction (ZUF-8), health locus of control (KKG) and coping process (FKV). These data were completed by sociodemographic and illness-related variables of the psychiatric basic documentation system (DGPPN-BADO) as well as current medication. Data were analysed by using MANO-VA and multiple linear regression analyses. Results: Neither differences between typical and atypical antipsychotics nor between various kinds of antipsychotic monotherapy regarding subjective outcome could be found. In multiple linear regression analyses antipsychotics did not emerge as predictors of quality of life, subjective wellbeing and patient satisfaction. Conclusion: By using different statistical analyses, differential influences of antipsychotics on subjective outcome could not be confirmed in a naturalistic treatment setting.
