Abstract

We report the crystal structure of the rubidium tetra-sulfide-ammoniate (3) Rb(18-crown-6) center dot 3NH(3) (18-crown-6 = 1.4.7.10.13.16-hexatoxicyclooctadecan). which formed as a byproduct from an equimolar reaction of elemental rubidium with SiS2 and 18-crown-6 in liquid ammonia. Single crystals were isolated and characterized by low temperature X-ray structure analysis. Rb(18-crown-6)RbS4 center dot 3NH(3) crystallizes in the chiral space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) with a = 8.2936(6) angstrom, b = 16.3880(12) angstrom, c = 18.3203(14) angstrom, V = 2490.0(3) angstrom(3) and Z = 4 as amber, prism shaped crystals. The ammoniate contains the typically chain-like tetrasulfide anion S-4(2-), rubidium-sulfur contacts lead to one-diniensionally infinite (sic)[{Rb(18-crown-6)(NH3)}(2) {Rb-2(mu-NH3)(4)}{S-4}] chains.
