Abstract

In elaborate studies were found that the sex ratio F/M of depressive disorder tends to decline with increasing age. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that sex differences in hospitalised patients presenting with a depressive episode diminish after 6. decade of life. Using the AGATE census for inpatients 2000 to 2004 in Bavaria, we examine the relationship between sex and age on depressive episode. Spearman-correlations and chi(2)-test were conducted with SPSS. Overall 41699 patients were evaluated. A total of 7 487 patients were rated as a depressive episode according to ICD-10. The sex-ratio F/M was 2.1:1. In the 5. and 6. decade of life the sex-ratio was 1.7:1. It climbed to a sex-ratio of 2.2:1 in the 7. decade of life and to 2.6:1 in the 8. decade of life. Differently from epidemiological studies the predicted reduction of sex differences in the post-menopausal years was not found. Elderly men suffering a depression are not adequately supplied.
