Abstract

According to ICD-10 and DSM-IV, mental retardation is defined as subaverage general intellectual functioning, manifested during the developmental period. Classification is made regarding the severity of intellectual disability, using the intelligence quotient (F70 - F79). Besides behavioural disorders, patients with mental retardation often have comorbid mental and somatic disorders, which often cause hospital admission. Comprehensive assessment is necessary to deal with all aspects of this multidimensional disorder. The present article gives an overview on classification, epidemiology, aetiology and diagnosis of mental retardation.
