Mental retardation is associated with a variety of comorbid psychiatric disorders, which requires multidimensional treatment strategies. Pharmacological approaches are common and much the some as for psychiatric patients without mental retardation. With respect to the limited cognitive and social capabilities, educational settings and different psychotherapeutic therapies are in use for many years to improve behavioural and psychiatric disorders. Deficits in mental health cafe are related to inpatient and outpatient treatment, especially regarding the collaboration between psychiatric services and remedial education. The present article gives an overview about treatment and mental health care of patients with mental retardation.
