Abstract

Guidelines are important for decision making in medicine. Methodical quality of these guidelines requires evaluation and must be standardized. Through integration into standard operating procedures (SOP) these guidelines have to be adjusted into local requirements to be fully implemented. Clinical benefits grow out of the assimilation of the SOPs into modules of clinical pathways. But to achieve this goal it is essential that the responsible clinical disciplines communicate and adjust their modular shares on a combined path for the welfare of the patient. Process and resource improvement, advances in training concepts and interdisciplinary treatment including consideration of transparency of expenses will be required to reach this aim. For implementation of guidelines in form of modular SOPs in clinical pathways of the whole process a quality management system is indispensable.
