Abstract

The ammoniates [Li(NH3)(4)](2)As-4, [Na(NH3)(5)](2)As-4 center dot 3NH(3), and [Cs0.35Rb0.65(2,2,2-crypt)](2)As-4 center dot 2NH(3) (2,2,2-crypt: 4,7,13,16,21,24-hexaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo[8.8.8]hexacosan) were synthesised either by direct reduction of arsenic with Li(Ca)/Na in liquid ammonia or by reaction of Rb4As6 with CsPH2 in the same solvent. Single crystals were isolated and characterised by low temperature X-ray structure analysis. All three compounds contain As-4(2-) anions of almost square planar geometry which have no contacts to metal ions. The medium As-As bond length in the putatively aromatic anions is 2.362 angstrom.
