Abstract

Determination of motor unit discharge Fates was not feasible during early concentric needle electromyography (CNEMG). Nowadays, discharge rates can quite easily be measured in CNEMG recordings comprising action potentials of at most 4 motor units. if, under this condition, the discharge rate is above 20/s in a limb muscle, a loss of motor units can reliably be inferred, independently of when the loss occurred. From normal discharge rates conclusions can be drawn only in cases of severe weakness. It is suggested that motor unit discharge rates be included in electromyographic reports.
