Abstract

The serotonergic and noradrenergic systems play an important role in the pharmacological treatment of depression. This review intends to clarify to what extent the so-called SSNRIs (selective serotonine and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors) venlafaxine and duloxetine, which is not yet approved, live up to their expectations regarding selectivity for both systems. This review focuses on pharmacological and pharmacokinetic data. although the clinical relevance of these data is taken into account as well. Both agents differ in their pharmacology substantially from tricyclics and SSRIs. Together with the respective clinical data their labelling as "SSNRIs" seems to be justified.
