For economic, structural and medical reasons the primary air rescue service at night is something which is under discussion and for which there is a definite requirement. However, the current discussion ignores the fact that during recent years helicopter emergency services operating at night have already been established in Germany. These helicopters operate on a subsidiary basis (ITH) or in answer to a direct emergency call (ITH/RTH: "dual use") and provide a primary air rescue service at night. (ITH = helicopter equipped to transport patients requiring intensive care; RTH = helicopter equipped to carry out primary air rescue in an emergency). This article states the existing definitions and laws pertaining to emergency medical services and the aviation regulations for primary air rescue at night. In addition it presents potential models for an air rescue service by night and describes the established practical and standardized procedure at TEAM DRF/HDM Flugservice GmbH.
