Abstract

The present article describes the "24-hour dual-use" principle in air rescue, a two-purpose concept that combines primary air-based emergency medical services and secondary interhospital transfer of patients. This principle has been put into practice by the air rescue centre of Regensburg (Germany) since 1999, but it may also serve as a model for other air rescue institutions. If sensibly introduced, it could enable a 24-hour operational service using existing resources without major additional financial expenses and organizational efforts - and thereby help to establish an extended primary air rescue service at night. However, a large-scale introduction and coordination is needed in order to achieve the desired effectivity and efficiency of the concept. Finally, systematic studies have to be performed on the use of these cost-intensive and labour-intensive rescue services, since there are only limited and insufficient data available yet.
