The complex Fe-III(cupferronate)(3), with cupferronate = PhN(NO)O-, shows a long-wavelength absorption at lambda(max) = 386 nm which is assigned to a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. LMCT excitation of the complex in acetonitrile leads to the formation of Fe(II) and a cupferronate radical in the primary photochemical step. This radical decays to nitrosobenzene and nitric oxide (NO). Fe-III(cupferronate)(3) disappears with phi = 0.03 at lambda(irr) = 366 nm. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
