Abstract

The longest-wavelength absorption of [(pi-allyl)(PdCl)-Cl-II](2) at lambda(max)=318 nm is assigned to an allyl(-)--> Pd-II ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. In the primary photochemical step LMCT excitation leads to the formation of an allyl radical and (PdCl)-Cl-I, which in acetonitrile undergoes a disproportionation to metallic palladium and palladium(II). Pd-II(CH3CN)(2)Cl-2 is formed with phi=0.008 at lambda(irr)=366 nm. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
