The complex [bipy(OH)(2)]Re(I)(CO)(3)Cl with bipy(OH)(2) = 3,3'-dihydroxy-2,2'-bipyridine has been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, ESI MS and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The complex shows a yellow emission at lambda(max) = 582 nm which originates from the lowest-energy bipy(OH)(2) intraligand (IL) triplet. The compound undergoes a reversible deprotonation to [(bipyO(2))Re(I)(CO)(3)Cl](2-) which is not luminescent under ambient conditions. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
