The medical branch of proctology is concerned with the anatomy and function of the anorectum and associated disorders and diseases. Proper functioning of the anal system has high psychosocial priority in our society. The spectrum of proctological disorders ranges from occasional, self-limiting disturbances to complex diseases of the anorectum. Clinical proctologists involved in all fields should be knowledgeable about current diagnostic possibilities to be able to provide patients with causal rather than symptomatic treatment.
