Abstract

A quality management system is needed to guarantee the high quality of autologous blood prepared by cell washing during blood salvage. It implies a profound understanding of the composition of collected shed blood and of the preparation process, a thorough documentation, and the measurement of quality control parameters. Process quality can be assessed by sample evaluation of RBC recovery (> 80%) and plasma wash out efficacy (> 90%). Product quality should be monitored by assessing volume and haematocrit (> 50%).
