The electronic spectrum of (C5H5FeC5H4)-C-II-(HgCl)-Cl-II shows a Fe-II to Hg-II metal-to-metal charge transfer (MMCT) absorption at lambda (max) = 300 nm. The photolysis of the complex in ethanol/HClO4 mixtures induced by MMCT excitation leads to the formation of [(C5H5FeC5H5)-C-III](+) and elemental mercury with phi = 7 x 10(-3) at lambda (irr) = 313 nm. @ 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
