Purpose: To study performance and efficiency of the HBsAg-screening in pregnant women in Germany as provided by the new guidelines on this topic introduced in 1994. Material and Methods: The specific pregnancy documents of 6083 pregnant women entering the obstetric wards of eleven clinics in Bavaria were examined to check whether, when and with which result HBsAg-screening had been performed. Results: HBsAg-screening had been performed only in 79.0% of the investigated women; this percentage ranged from 47.2% to 99.6% in different clinics. 70.7% of the screened women had been tested at the correct time after the 32nd week of pregnancy, whereas the testing of the remaining individuals had been performed earlier, in 8.3% as early as in the first or second trimenon. 0.9% of all tested women had been found to be HBsAg positive. Conclusion: Obviously the guidelines for universal testing of HBsAg in pregnant women after the 32nd week of pregnancy are followed only insufficiently. Specific information of obstetricians and gynaecologists on the problem of hepatitis B and its peripartal transmission seems to be essential.
