The first choice far the treatment of mania are lithium and anticonvulsants like carbamazepine and valproate. Neuroleptics and benzodiazepines ave second choice drugs.. However, when looking at choice therapy conditions as documented by the AMUP Bayern (a Bavarian drug surveillance program), the drugs most frequently used for the treatment of mania are neuroleptics. 88% oof the patients with mania got at least one neuroleptic drug. Most of then? were treated with a combination of two or. three psychoactive drugs. Each patient received an average of 2.82 drugs. Lithium or anticonvulsants are often not used at all. These results suggest that it is necessary to elaborate standardized therapy guidelines to improve the pharmacologic treatment of mania in Germany The severity! of the disease and the experience of the clinicians, should play an important role among these considerations.
