Abstract

An adult female domestic short hair cat was referred from an animal shelter because of dyspnea, fever, and vomiting. Clinical findings included fever of 40.5 degrees C, lethargy, emaciation, dehydration, polypnea, dyspnea, and enforced bronchial lung sounds. Thoracic radiographs showed an interstitial and alveolar pattern with partial consolidation and emphysema. Necropsy findings consisted of disseminated nodular infiltrations of the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes. Histopathology of these organs revealed a granulomatous inflammation with a large number of acid-fast bacilli. Application of molecular biology methods demonstrated the presence of nucleic acid sequences characteristic for Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
