Abstract

In this article, the effects of therapy on substance-addicted offenders treated in a forensic psychiatric hospital in accordance with (sic) 64 StGB (German Criminal Code) are presented. The results are compared with those of patients whose therapy was canceled due to the lack of a reasonable prospect of success. Although numerous variables mean that the comparability of the two groups is somewhat limited, evidence does point to successful treatment outcomes. Patients who completed treatment were socially better integrated one year after treatment: a fact that is clearly represented by the number who reentered regular employment. They also displayed higher rates of abstinence (72.5 % vs. 47.0 %) and registered significantly fewer criminal relapses (12.5 % vs. 30.1 %). Even in cases where complete abstinence could not be achieved, those who underwent therapy still showed positive results like modified consumption patterns or intermittent phases of abstinence.
