Given a reduced flat local algebra T/k we study the question whether T/k is evolutionarily stable. This question was raised by B. Mazur and studied by Eisenbud and Mazur in connection with the work of Wiles on Galois deformations. It is still open whether in case k is a discrete valuation ring of mixed characteristics or a field of characteristic 0 every such algebra is evolutionarily stable. We reduce this problem to a question on nilpotent elements in a graded ring which we can answer in a number of cases.
