The longest-wavelength absorption of Re(binap) (CO)(3)Cl (binap = 2,2'-bis-(diphenyl-phosphino) -1,1'-binaphthyl) in ethanol at lambda(max) = 338 nm is assigned to a metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition which terminates at the binaphthyl moiety of the bisphosphine ligand. The MLCT triplet is emissive in solution at r.t. (in ethanol, lambda(max) = 570 nm). Oxygen quenches the phosphorescence of the complex. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
