Adipose tissue is a high caloric and nearly unlimited energy store, regulated solely by food supply: at times of excessive food supply, the tissue is storing energy in the form of triglycerides, at times of food restriction energy is released in the form of fatty acids. Due to its metabolic and endocrine functions, a pathologic increase of the adipose tissue (obesity) has serious consequences for health and contributes to the development of the metabolic syndrome.
