Abstract

Different meanings of the notion "synergy" are presented and discussed. Special attention is given to the synergy-concept defined by Collins and Guetzkow (1964). The consequences of using this concept are demonstrated. Differences in tasks and also in group composition are taken in consideration. The synergy-concept according to Collins and Guetzkow seems to be applicable for unitary tasks and divisible tasks with low coordination requirements, but seems not appropriate for divisible tasks with high coordination requirements. Consequences for future research concerning synergy in groups are discussed.
