Abstract

The present case report describes a postoperative paraplegia after an uncomplicated general anaesthesia for an esophagectomy, The reason for the paraplegia was probably an anterior spinal artery syndrome caused by an embolisation of the artery of Adamkiewicz, The origin of the embolus could have been a protruding atheroma of the thoracic aorta. If an epidural anaethesia had been used, a causal relationship might have been supposed. The occurrence of a postoperative paraplegia after esophagectomy is not necessarily implied by a regional anaethesia.
