Abstract

The methanol extract obtained from the fruits of Cassia fistula L. inhibited the 5-lipoxygenase catalysed formation of leukotriene B-4 in bovine polymorphonuclear leukocytes with an IC50 value of 38 mu g/mL. Also, lipid peroxidation in bovine brain phospholipid liposomes induced with 2,2'-azo-bis-(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH) was inhibited with an IC50 value of 40 mu g/mL. A linear correlation was obtained between the effects of the extract in the two kinds of assays suggesting a redox-based mechanism for the inhibition of the 5-lipoxygenase enzyme.
