Abstract

Interaction of Hg2+ and cyclohexene in argon-saturated acidic aqueous solution leads to the formation of a hydroxomercurated compound characterized with an intense absorption band at 214 nm (epsilon= 1.0 x 10(4) M-1 cm(-1)). This reaction proved to be reversible with an equilibrium constant of 2.3 x 10(3). Photolysis of this system (lambda(ir)=230 nm) produces Hg-2(2+) in the first stage with a quantum yield of 0.88. Prolonged irradiation results in the reduction of Hg-2(2+) to metallic mercury. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
