Abstract

The electronic spectrum of Pt-II(COD)(CH3)(2) (COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) in CH3CN shows two long-wavelength absorptions at lambda(max) = 352 nm (epsilon = 150) and 318 nm (790) which are assigned to the spin-forbidden and spin-allowed ligand-to-ligand charge transfer transitions a(1) --> b(1) (CH3- --> pi* COD). The complex is non-emissive but photoreactive. While Ph-II(COD)(CH3)(2) undergoes a photode composition in CH3CN an oxidative addition takes place in the presence of CH3I. The photoproduct [Pt-IV(CH3)(3)I](4) is formed with phi = 0.005 at lambda(irr) = 313 nm. (C) 1998 Elsevier science S.A.
