With Lessing towards the Age of Multimedia This paper tries to show that 1. historical positions taken in the field of Western aesthetics are by all means suited to contribute substantially to our present debate about multimedia; that 2. a greater flow of data does not necessarily lead to a greater state of information; and that 3. age-old poetic principles can be relevant for multimedia products. Thus the paper presents a plea for a scholarly approach to multimedia research against a historical backdrop.
