The existence of anharmonic localized vibrations in crystals with frequencies inside the phonon band is discussed. It is shown that stationary localized modes exist at anharmonic defects which are resonant with extended modes. For more general systems of anharmonic chains quasi-localized in-band modes are presented and their stability properties are analyzed. Similar modes are found for a nonlinear Schrodinger equation with third-order dispersion. (C) 1997 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.
