Abstract

The complex Cr(IV)(O-2)(2)(NH3)(3) shows an absorption band at lambda(max) = 390 nm which is assigned to a d sigma* metal-to-ligand charge transfer (MLCT) transition from Cr(IV) to the coordinated peroxide. Upon MLCT excitation the aqueous complex undergoes an intramolecular oxidative addition of peroxide to Cr(IV) leading to chromate with phi = 0.35 at lambda(irr) = 254 nm.
