Abstract

The paper deals with a paradigmatic form of honour in modern societies. Starting point is the statement that social relations of acknowledgement still are symbolized by means of a semantics of honour. Referring to the classical theories by Weber, Bourdieu, and Simmel, the central functions of honour in the modern world are characterized as differentiation, generation of power, and integration. The paper argues that these functions are performed effectively and subtly by honourings. Decorations and badges of honour then are taken as examples to show how these "signs of acknowledgement" foster processes of status group closure and how they create networks among today's elites. At the same time, the honourings work as institutions that establish and stabilize values, thereby causing effects of social integration. Here the dimensions of value rationality and means-ends rationality are closely connected with one another.
