Abstract

Twenty-three species of Phellinus were characterized with regard to karyology, DNA content of nuclei and sexuality; besides, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was studied in ten species and ribosomal DNA (rDNA) was studied in 14 species. Based on the taxa tested, four species complexes could be distinguished, representing the P. robustus group (oligonucleate, putative diploid, homothallic, mtDNA slightly variable), the P. igniarius group (oligonucleate, putative haploid, heterothallic, mtDNA variable), the P. pini group (oligonucleate, putative haploid, heterothallic, mtDNA variable), and the P. ferreus group (binucleate, putative haploid, homothallic, mtDNA slightly variable). The groups were uniform except for P. nigrolimitatus and P. torulosus. Using RFLP (restriction fragment length polymorphism) data from enzymatically amplified rDNA a cluster analysis was performed through UPGMA, the results of which were in good agreement with the other characters analysed. Phellinus nigrolimitatus was placed within the P. igniarius group, but the definite position of this species still remains questionable; P. torulosus was placed within the P. ferreus group. The data distinctly delimited the P. robustus group. As a result, it is proposed to accept this group as a separate genus, designated as Fomitiporis.
