Abstract

We present new data on the dispersion of the longitudinal optic (LO) phonons along the [100] direction in diamond obtained by neutron inelastic scattering and by first principles calculations using two different pseudopotentials for the carbon atom. The experimental and theoretical results are found to be in excellent quantitative agreement, providing a clear evidence for a maximum of the LO phonon dispersion curve lying above the Gamma-point frequency.
