Abstract

Single crystals of the new intermetallic compounds MgEr2 and MgTb2 have been obtained from the elements by high-pressure-high-temperature reaction in a modified Belt-type apparatus. The compounds crystallize tetragonally, space group I4/mmm, with a = 3.7240(5), c = 12.452(3) Angstrom (MgEr2) and a = 3.8356(7), c = 12.436(5) Angstrom (MgTb2). The structure refinement (R1 = 0.028, wR2=0.064 for MgEr2; R1 = 0.041, wR2 = 0.076 for MgTb2) showed both compounds to be isostructural with MoSi2.
