Abstract

Single crystals of the Laves-Friauf phases HoMg2, TmMg2 and YbMg2 were obtained from the elements by high-pressure-high-temperature reaction in a modified Belt-type apparatus. The compounds crystallize hexagonally, space group P6(3)/mmc, with a=6.015(1), c=9.746(2) Angstrom (HoMg2), a=5.9808(8), c=9.695(1) Angstrom (TmMg2) and a 6.2551(6), c = 10.120(1) Angstrom (YbMg2). The structure refinement (R1 = 0.031, wR2 = 0.075 for HoMg2; R1 = 0.019, wR2 = 0.059 for TmMg2; R1 = 0.014, wR2 = 0.042 for YbMg2) shelved all three compounds to be isostructural with MgZn2.
