While there is strong empirical evidence in the literature that free recall performance improves with repeated testing (reminiscence), it is completely open hitherto how this improvement varies with the amount of retroactive inhibition. To investigate the interplay of these two factors we conducted an experiment, in which subjects studied one learning list and zero, two, or four interpolated lists. After this study phase the subjects were tested on four successive free recall tests in order to recall all presented items. Both the number of interpolated lists and the number of recall tests influenced the recall performance on the learning list. The effects of the two factors were additive, i.e. there was no significant interaction between the number of tests and the interpolation level. These data suggest that reminiscence and retroactive inhibition affect recall performance independently of each other. We also used our data to test the reminiscence hypothesis of Roediger, Payne, Gillespie, and Lean (1982). We found systematic deviations from this hypothesis in the framework of our interference paradigm.
